about

Two Laws

Justice and fairness are two things that are not easy to come by in this life. There are, of course, a number of reasons. This song explores one of those reasons. It’s a game that many people play called ‘Do As I Say, Not As I Do’.
Frequently this is accompanied by the addition of ‘Or Else’.

This game is all too often taken to breathtaking extremes by some of the so-called ‘alphas’ in human society - the ‘powers that be’, if you like. Examples are ubiquitous and I’m sure all of us have observed them and quite possibly suffered from them.

Two Laws is my recent take on this facet of reality.

lyrics

Two Laws

Two laws masqueradin’ as one.
Two laws keep you walkin’ while they run.
Two laws – that’s the way they get you, son.
And that’s no way to run a mighty country.

Workin’ all day for the bills and the taxes
Thinkin’ that you’re doin’ all the right things.
But think about this before everyone relaxes –
They’re up in Washington makin’ like kings.

Catch some bad luck and you’re headin’ for the hoosegow
Knowin’ all the time it ain’t at all fair.
While you’re ‘a rottin’ they’re swiggin’ back the booze now,
Spendin’ your money like it was all theirs.

Worryin’ all night ‘cause your unemployment’s lapsin’,
‘Memberin’ that the big boys got bailin’ out.
They’re makin’ hay while your life is collapsin’,
Smilin’ as your job goes sailin’ on out.

Two lies never add up to be true.
Two lies – while they’re hidin’ what they do.
Two lies as they’re hangin’ me and you.
And that’s the way you ruin a mighty country.
